Welcome! Whether you're new to the Sequim-Shisō Sister City Association or a long-time supporter, this FAQ page is here to help you learn more about who we are, what we do, and how you can get involved.

About the Sister City Relationship

What is the Sequim-Shisō Sister City Association (SSSCA)?
The SSSCA is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organization that promotes friendship and cultural exchange between the people of Sequim, Washington, and Shisō, Japan. We maintain the Friendship Garden as a living symbol of our partnership. Our goal is to support student and citizen exchanges, and host cultural and educational events.

What does it mean to be a “Sister City”?
A Sister City relationship is a long-term, formal agreement between two communities in different countries to promote cultural understanding, educational exchanges, and mutual goodwill.

When and how did Sequim and Shisō become Sister Cities?
Sequim became Sister Cities with Yamasaki in 1992. The relationship began through a shared appreciation for community, natural beauty, and a desire to create lasting international friendships. In 2004, Yamasaki merged with three other towns to become Shisō. Sequim and Shisō then signed a new Sister City agreement.

Where is Shisō, Japan, and what is it like?
Shisō is located in Hyōgo Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan. It’s a beautiful, rural city surrounded by forests, rivers, and mountains, with a rich history and warm community spirit—much like Sequim.

Why were Sequim and Shisō paired as Sister Cities?
The pairing was based on shared values: both cities have a love for nature, agriculture, and community. The connection has grown into a strong bond over decades of exchanges and cultural sharing.

How does this relationship benefit the community?
The Sister City relationship offers cultural education, personal growth, and global friendship. It helps build understanding between cultures and enriches the lives of participants and the broader community. The Sister City Garden Club maintains the Friendship Garden, a gem visited by tourists and locals.

Programs & Exchanges

What kinds of exchange programs are offered?
There have been student exchanges in the past, and we are currently working on updating this program.

Are there opportunities for adults to visit Shisō?
We would love to get a program like this up and running. Let us know if you’re interested in future trips! These trips would include sightseeing, cultural activities, and possible home stays.

Do I need to speak Japanese to participate?
No prior Japanese language skills are required. Basic phrases can help, but the emphasis is on building connections—communication often happens through gestures, smiles, and kindness!

How long are the exchange trips?
In the past, trips have lasted 10 days. Students and adult chaperones followed a full itinerary of cultural and community activities during their stay.

What are the costs involved in participating?
Participants are generally responsible for travel costs such as airfare and passports. Students have raised funds for their trip by working during a “park-a-thon” where they take care of local parks. Hosting is always free and volunteer-based.

How can I host a visiting student or delegate from Japan?
Hosting is a wonderful way to connect with Japanese culture without leaving home. Host families provide meals, a place to stay, and a welcoming environment. Contact us if you’re interested!

Events & Activities

What events does the SSSCA host throughout the year?
In the future, we hope to host seasonal events, cultural programs, fundraiser dinners, and group gatherings. When our exchange program is running, we will host exchange send-offs and welcome receptions. Our calendar includes monthly Sister City Association meetings and weekly garden days.

What is the Friendship Garden, and how can I visit it?
The Friendship Garden is a mix between Pacific Northwest and Japanese flora in Carrie Blake Park, created to honor our Sister City relationship. It’s open year-round and offers a peaceful place for reflection and community connection.

Do you participate in local events?
Yes! We often have a presence at community festivals, including the Irrigation Festival. It’s a great time to stop by, meet our members, and learn how to get involved. We also have a booth at the Sequim Farmers and Artisans Market 2-3 times per market season. Dates will be announced on our social media.

Are there any cultural workshops, talks, or community gatherings?
We would love to host events like these! If you would be interested in cultural workshops, film nights, guest speakers, and family-friendly gatherings that celebrate both Japanese and American traditions, let us know!

The SSSCA is a not-for-profit organization led by a volunteer board and active members from the community. We work together to plan programs, organize exchanges, and build bridges between Sequim and Shisō.

How is the association funded?
We rely on donations and membership dues. Every dollar goes toward supporting our mission of international friendship and education.

How can I donate?

Donations to Sequim-Shisō Sister City Association need to be sent to Japan-America Society of the State of Washington (JASSW). You can use their online portal here:

Click the “Sequim-Shiso Exchange” bubble to ensure your donation goes to SSSCA. If you'd like to be more specific, you can write in the comment section.

Donations by check can be mailed to: Japan-America Society of the State of Washington, 3010 77th Ave SE, Suite 102, Mercer Island WA 98040.

Why do donations go through the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington (JASSW)?

Due to insurance and legal requirements, the Sequim-Shisō Sister City Association operates as an associate program of the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington.

This partnership helps us stay covered under their liability insurance and maintain not-for-profit compliance. As a result, donations to support our programs must first be processed through JASSW.

From there, the funds are directed to us for our local events, exchanges, and activities.

When donating, please be sure to note “For Sequim-Shisō Sister City Association” on your check or online form, so the funds are properly routed.

We’re grateful for your support and thank you for helping us maintain this valuable international connection!
